FAQs

Common questions answered with simplicity for you.

What age group do you tutor?

We provide tutoring for children of all ages, understanding that many older students continue to experience reading challenges. While our primary focus is on foundational reading skills, the instructional methods we use are both necessary and effective for teaching and remediating reading difficulties, regardless of a student's age or grade level.

What kind of reading difficulties is your tutoring tailored to?

We offer targeted support in letter recognition, letter-sound correspondence, phonics and decoding, blending and segmenting, spelling, and fluency. While comprehension is not our primary focus, strengthening these foundational skills--along with linguistic abilities--naturally contributes to improved reading comprehension.

Are your services appropriate for my child's needs?

If your child shows any of the following challenges while reading, you've come to the right place:

  • Difficulty learning letters and their sounds

  • Trouble breaking words down into individual sounds

  • Needing to sound out every word instead of reading automatically

  • Sounding out a word but saying a completely different one

  • Guessing words based on pictures or just the first sound

  • Reading slowly and with great effort

  • Reading a word correctly one time but incorrectly the next

  • Struggling with accurate spelling

My child reads or writes letters backwards. Could this mean they have dyslexia?

It's a common misconception that letter reversals indicate dyslexia. According to The International Dyslexia Association, reversing letters is typical for many children through around 2nd grade as they develop letter-sound awareness.

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability characterized primarily by persistent difficulties with reading and spelling, even with proper instruction and support.

Does The Reading Hive diagnose dyslexia?

No, The Reading Hive does not provide formal diagnoses for dyslexia or other learning differences at this time.

However, our instructional approach is based on evidence-based practices aligned with the Science of Reading, which are effective for all learners--including those with dyslexia. Whether or not a child has a formal diagnosis, we focus on building foundational reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, and spelling.

Our goal is to provide targeted, individualized support that helps each student become a more confident reading--regardless of their diagnosis.
